MobyScan

Know what a unit is worth before you reach the register.

Sourcing is a series of yes-or-no decisions made in eight seconds, standing in an aisle, with a queue behind you. MobyScan answers the only question that matters in that moment — what is actually left after Amazon takes its cut — and answers it with your real costs, your fee schedule and your own buying rules.

Why it exists

The margin is won or lost in the aisle, not in the spreadsheet

Every seller who has taken a loss on a pallet knows the feeling: the numbers looked fine until the fees showed up. MobyScan moves that discovery forward to the aisle.

Today

Sourcing on instinct

  • ×You check the current price in a consumer app and multiply by a rule of thumb, because the real fee table is three screens deep.
  • ×Sales rank is a single number with no history, so a one-off spike looks identical to a steady seller.
  • ×Gating, hazmat and meltable restrictions surface weeks later, when the shipment is already at the warehouse.
  • ×Dimensional weight pushes the unit into the next size tier and quietly eats a dollar you never budgeted for.
  • ×The buy list is a photo of a receipt and a note in your phone that nobody can read on Sunday night.
With MobyScan

Sourcing on numbers

  • ✓Net per unit, ROI and margin computed from the same fee schedule Amazon applies to your account.
  • ✓Rank and price plotted over weeks and months, so you can tell a real seller from a fluke.
  • ✓Restriction, condition and IP flags checked against your seller account before the unit goes in the cart.
  • ✓Size tier and weight band named on screen, so the fulfilment fee is a fact rather than an estimate.
  • ✓Everything you approve lands in a buy list that MobyLister turns into live listings without re-typing a thing.
What it does

Everything the aisle decision needs, on one screen

No tabs, no switching apps, no mental arithmetic while somebody waits for the shelf behind you.

01

Live profit calculator

Referral fee, fulfilment fee, storage, prep, inbound freight and your unit cost, resolved into net per unit, ROI and margin. Change the buy price and every number moves with it.

02

A fee breakdown you can audit

Every deduction is a named line with its size tier and weight band, not a single lump labelled “fees”. When a unit is unexpectedly thin, you can see exactly which line did it.

03

Rank history, not a snapshot

Sales rank and price over weeks and months, with the drops that indicate real sales marked. A single rank number tells you almost nothing; the shape of the line tells you nearly everything.

04

Buyability and gating checks

Brand gating, hazmat, meltable, adult and condition restrictions checked against your own selling privileges — because a restriction that applies to another seller is irrelevant to you.

05

Offline mode that actually works

A local catalogue lives on the device, so lookups stay fast in warehouse dead zones and thrift-store basements. Scans queue quietly and sync the moment you have signal again.

06

Your rules, your verdict

Set minimum ROI, minimum net, maximum rank and maximum sellers on the listing. The screen turns green or red on its own, so a tired brain at hour six makes the same decision it made at hour one.

How it works

Scan, read, decide

The whole point is that this fits inside the pause between picking a unit up and putting it back down.

01

Scan

Phone camera, Bluetooth ring scanner or laser wedge — whatever you already carry. Type an ASIN, UPC or ISBN if the barcode is scuffed.

Any device
02

Read the verdict

Net, ROI, rank and restrictions land together. The colour tells you the answer before you have finished reading the numbers.

03

Adjust the cost

Clearance sticker, coupon, quantity break: change the buy price and the whole calculation follows in real time.

The math, shown

Nothing is hidden inside a single number called “fees”

Most scanning apps show you a profit figure and ask you to trust it. MobyScan shows the arithmetic line by line, because the line you disagree with is the one worth arguing about — and because a fee you can see is a fee you can plan around.

  • Referral, fulfilment and storage are pulled from the fee schedule that applies to your account and category.
  • Size tier and weight band are named, so a unit that just crossed into the next tier is obvious immediately.
  • Prep, inbound freight and any per-unit handling you pay a prep centre are yours to set once and forget.
  • Change any input and the net, ROI and margin all move together — no second calculator, no rounding drift.
“
A bad buy costs you twice: once at the till, and again in storage nine months later.

MobyScan exists to make the second cost impossible — by making the first decision honest.

FAQ

MobyScan,
in detail

The questions sellers ask us before they take a scanner into a store for the first time.

Tell our McKinney, TX team what your week actually looks like and we will tell you whether MobyScan changes it — or whether another tool is the better first move.

Do I need a special scanner, or will my phone do?

Your phone camera works on day one and is enough for most retail sourcing. Once you are scanning hundreds of units a trip, a Bluetooth ring scanner is faster and easier on the wrist; MobyScan pairs with most ring and laser models, and you can switch between camera and scanner without changing anything in your settings.

Does it really work with no signal in the store?

Yes. MobyScan keeps a local product database on the device, so lookups stay fast in basements, back rooms and warehouse dead zones. Scans and decisions queue on the phone and sync as soon as you are back on a signal, so nothing is lost if you finish a trip offline.

How accurate are the fee estimates?

The referral and fulfilment fees come from the fee schedule that applies to your account and the product’s category and size tier, not from a generic average. The two inputs that are genuinely yours — prep cost and inbound freight per unit — you set once, and we would rather you set them slightly high than slightly low.

Will it tell me whether I am gated on a brand?

It checks your own selling privileges, which is the part that matters: brand gating, hazmat, meltable and condition restrictions differ from seller to seller. If your account can list it, MobyScan says so; if approval is required, you see that in the aisle rather than at check-in.

Does it work for books and media?

Yes. ISBN lookups, condition grades and media-specific rank data are supported, and MobyScan is happy to be used purely as a book scanner. Condition notes set here carry through to MobyLister when you list.

Is there a limit on how many items I can scan?

No. Scanning is unmetered on every plan — the monthly limits in the plans apply to turnover, stock items and automated actions, not to lookups. Scanning a thousand units and buying four of them is a perfectly normal day.

Can more than one person scan on the same account?

Yes, subject to the seat count on your plan. Each buyer signs in with their own login, and the buy list shows who scanned what, which matters the moment you start sending people to different stores.

What happens to a unit after I approve it?

It joins a buy list carrying its cost, source, date and quantity. MobyLister turns that list into listings, MobyShelf builds the inbound shipment and MobyPoint keeps the cost basis for your books — all from the record created when you scanned it.
